The Be Well Bulletin

Spring 2019

Community Events

Keeping our members and other Ohio residents informed about important health topics is a big part of Buckeye Health Plan’s commitment to our communities.

Recently, Community Relations Representative Anisa Ballard coordinated several presentations throughout the Dayton area with featured speaker Dr. Surender R. Neravetla, MD FACS. Dr. Neravetla is the Director of Cardiac Surgery at Springfield Regional Medical Center.

These presentations focused on the health risks and dangers of using table salt, and encouraged attendees to choose alternative spices, not salt, to season their food.

Read more about Dr. Neravetla and his work in the below Health Plan News article.

Buckeye Health Plan – along with health partners Visiting Physicians, Pinnacle Healthcare, Grace Hospice, Family and Community Services, and local pharmacies – also hosted mini health fairs at community centers in the area.

More community events are being planned for 2019. These are a great way to meet your Buckeye team, learn more about your Allwell plan, and get helpful health and wellness tips you can use every day.

Check out the next Be Well issue for more information on upcoming events.

Ohio Doctor Takes Salt Intake Issues to Heart

Table salt is the most widely ignored cause of extensive health problems specifically affecting African-Americans, according to Dr. Surender Neravetla, a top-ranked cardiac surgeon.

Dr. Neravetla, who practices in Springfield, OH and is a provider in the Allwell network, is passionate about raising awareness about this major cause of heart disease, diabetes and high blood pressure. Despite his medical training, Dr. Neravetla’s own family has suffered from the same health issues he is committed to preventing. “My father died of coronary artery disease at age 70,” says Neravetla.

Dr. Neravetla started the cardiac surgery program in Springfield in 1998. His expertise has helped this program earn several national awards. He was named one of “America’s Top Surgeons” by the Consumer Research Council of America. The cardiac surgeon has also written two highly regarded books – Salt Kills and Salt: Black America’s Silent Killer – about the dangers of using table salt.
